Open the Door to a New Way of Experiencing the World

“I speak through you and through the world all of the time.”

–Grandfather Fire from Heard Around the Fire, p. 6

Walking with Fire is an online introduction to the wisdom of Grandfather Fire. Whether you have yet to attend one of Sacred Fire’s Fire Speaks events, or have attended and want to deepen your appreciation for the teachings of Grandfather Fire, this program is for you.

As the name of the program suggests, the purpose of Walking with Fire is not so much to get to a destination—like a final, set ‘understanding’ of what Grandfather is teaching. Really it is more of a process and this offering is meant to open the door to a new way of experiencing the world.

Actually it is really a very old way! Our ancestors were gathering around the fire many, many thousands of years ago. They did so for the light, warmth, and safety, but as the Story of Humans and Fire indicates, they also did it because of the Spiritual Presence of Fire. That Spirit helps us to remember our connection to the beautiful, mysterious web of life.

We will share our thoughts and any experiences that bear upon that teaching. In that way, it is not about finding the one ‘right’ answer, but in true Heart fashion, seeing how the wisdom of Fire is already moving through our lives. This is the kind of learning that we call ‘knowing’—something that resonates deeply with who we are and what we are meant to bring forth in the world.

Our purpose is to create a deeper appreciation for the wisdom of Fire and how it can practically benefit our lives. Those benefits include joy, peace, and gratitude.

We hope you will join us in this adventure of Walking with Fire!

  • Johnathan Merritt

Jonathan Merritt is a mara’akame, a traditional shamanic healer in the lineage of the Huichol people of Mexico’s Western Sierra Madre. Jonathan has been walking this healing path for twenty-four years. After a six-year apprenticeship under the guidance don Eliot Cowan, he was initiated in a traditional ritual by the great Huichol healer, don Jose de la Cruz Sandoval. He belongs to El Grupo Tatewari, a circle of Western Mara’akate who work together under the leadership and teaching of don David Wiley to deepen our path and perspective, to bring healing and wise counsel to our people.

Healing in the Huichol tradition addresses the spiritual roots of illness and works to restore balance in our lives. As a Western mara’akame, Jonathan provides healing and wise counsel for physical maladies as well as spiritual illnesses, such as isolation, disconnection and dislocation, depression, spiritual emptiness, lack of meaning and purpose, that don’t commonly exist among the Huichols.

Jonathan is also an initiated Fire Keeper under the auspices of Sacred Fire (www.sacredfire.org). Married with three children, he keeps a Community Sacred Fire in Portland, Oregon.

Registration is open

Due to the sacred nature of the teachings, the recording will not be made available at this time. It will be recorded for the sole purpose of helping our team improve for the future. The teachings shared in these sessions will be available in the upcoming publication of Heard Around the Fire, Volume II: Teachings of Grandfather Fire.
